Fiagril assina termo de parceria para reciclagem de óleo usado em Lucas do Rio Verde

Fiagril signed a partnership agreement for the development of the “de Olho no Óleo [With an Eye on Cooking Oil] project, which aims to provide the correct disposal of used cooking oil in the Municipality of Lucas do Rio Verde (334 km from Cuiabá). The proposal is to allow the collected material, which is highly polluting, to be transformed into biodiesel at the company’s plant in the city, thus becoming a source of sustainable energy.

The project is being conceived in partnership with the Government of the Municipality of Lucas do Rio Verde, through the Secretariat of Environment and the Association of Recyclable Materials Collectors (Acorlucas). The first collection point will be at the Ecoponto, located on Avenida da Fé, in the bairro Tessele Júnior, where a team is already working to help store these materials.

According to Henrique Mazzardo, a CEO at Fiagril, the partnership benefits the environment and meets Fiagril’s purpose. “It is a project that promotes a sustainable economy, benefiting the ecosystem, the Acorlucas workers, and the entire community, which is directly linked to our purpose of transforming lives by connecting sustainable production with the world.”

Recently, Fiagril joined the United Nations (UN) Global Compact, which mobilizes the international business community to adopt fundamental values in the areas of human rights, labor relations, environment, and anti-corruption. The partnership in the De Olho no Óleo project is also part of the actions that the company has been adopting following the precepts of the Global Compact and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As an incentive, the association will receive up to BRL 2.00 per liter of oil collected. “It will be a great benefit for us, who already work in recycling at the Ecoponto. We are very satisfied”, celebrated Acorlucas’ president, Rosivaldo Cruz.

Each liter of used oil can pollute up to 20 thousand liters of water and that is why it is important to dispose of it correctly. Once this material is thrown down sinks, drains and toilets, it can cause clogging of the pipes. If discarded in rivers and lakes, it creates a thin layer on the surface, which prevents the oxygenation of the groundwater.

To contribute to the action, the citizen must wait for the oil to be discarded to cool down and store it in a pet bottle, and then take it to the collection point. “At first the work will be at the Ecopoint, but we are structuring the project to work with other collection points in the City,” concluded the Environment Secretary, Suzana Romancini.

How does the process work?

  • Deliver your used oil stored in pet bottles, which will be placed in “drums”, a kind of plastic barrel.
  • After filling, the containers will be removed by a truck. The collected oil will be transported by a specialized company.
  • When it reaches the plant, the residue, previously useless, is transformed into biofuel, and is no longer a polluting agent.
